The Central Bank of The Gambia (CBG)
is the central bank of Gambia. As a central bank, CBG is responsible for
providing banking services to the Gambian government, for managing interest
rates and foreign exchange, for interacting with Gambian industries, for
supporting microfinance, and for managing the value of the dalasi, which is
Gambia's currency. |

Its main role
is to act as banker to the Gambia Government and the commercial banks. They
are also responsible for providing a secure & efficient payment & settlement
system within the finance sector. The Central Bank's other functions involve
various departments who issuing (Gambia Government T-Bills) on behalf of the
Government, banking supervision, insurance industry compliance, licensing
foreign exchange bureaus, economic research, the production of statistics.
The institution performs its role independently. However, its role is
carried under the general supervision of the Secretary of State for Finance
and Economic Affairs. |
The primary objectives of the Central Bank are to:
♦ Achieve and maintain price stability;
♦ Promote and maintain the stability of the currency of The Gambia;
♦ Direct and regulate the financial, insurance, banking and currency system
in the interest of the economic development of The Gambia; and
♦ Encourage and promote sustainable economic development and the efficient
utilization of the resources of The Gambia through the effective and
efficient operation of a financial system.
To meet its
objectives, the Central Bank has a series of operating functions and
attributes regarding the following areas: the issue of bank notes and coins,
the regulation of the amount of money in circulation and credit, the
regulation of the financial system and the capital market, faculties to
preserve financial system stability, functions as part of its role as fiscal
agent, attributes in terms of international questions, attributes regarding
foreign currency operations and statistical functions.

functions of Central Bank of Gambia include providing banking services to
the Government of Gambia and financial institutions, issuing the domestic
