The Central
Bank of Belize is the central bank of the Central American nation of Belize,
established in 1982. |
|
|
 |
The Central
Bank is the natural successor to the Monetary Authority of Belize,
established from 1976 to 1981, and the Board of Commissioners of Currency
running from 1894. The latter is responsible for the devaluation crisis that
led to the nationalist movement of the 1950s. The mission of the Central
Bank of Belize is to foster the development of an economic and financial
environment in Belize that will facilitate economic growth.
In pursuit of
its mission, and to maintain the economy’s internal and external balance,
the goals and operating objectives of the Central Bank of Belize are as
follows:
Promote monetary stability;
Regulate the issue and availability of money and its international exchange;
Regulate and monitor the financial environment;
|
Foster good credit and exchange conditions; and
Foster the development of money and capital markets in Belize.
Similar to other Central Banks
in the English speaking Caribbean, the Central Bank of Belize is modeled on
the Bank of England and its functions include providing banking services to
the Government of Belize and financial institutions, issuing the domestic
currency, regulating commercial banks and other financial institutions,
providing economic advice to the Government, conducting research and
publishing information on monetary and other economic developments. Only
notes and coins issued by the Central Bank shall be legal tender in Belize.
