The Bank of
Israel (Hebrew: בנק ישראל Arabic: بنك إسرائيل) is the central bank of
Israel. It is located in Kiryat HaMemshala in Israel's capital city of
Jerusalem, with a branch office in Tel Aviv. The Bank of Israel was founded
on August 24, 1954. |
|
|
|
The Bank has
a branch in Tel Aviv (in Lillienblum Street), and there is also an extension
of the Banking Supervision Department in Tel Aviv (in Yavneh Street). The
Bank of Israel is rather unusual when compared to other financial
institutions in that the Governor alone decides whether to change rates or
keep them on hold, rather than being voted upon by board members. Prior to
this decision, discussions are held at two levels - first in a broad and
then narrow forum.
The Bank is
independent, and its objectives and operating methods are specified in the
Bank of Israel Law, 5770-2010. Its objectives are to maintain price
stability, to support the Government's objectives especially growth and
employment, and to support the stability of the financial system.
|
The objectives and functions of the Bank of Israel include:
Managing monetary policy
Holding
and managing the foreign currency reserves of the State
Supporting
the orderly activity and stability of the financial markets
Acting as
banker of the Government
Regulating
the economy's payment and clearing systems
Issuing
Currency and regulating and guiding the cash system of the economy
Supervising and regulating the banking system
Adviser to
the Government on economic matters
Collating
and disseminating information and data on Israel's economy
Representing Israel in the International Financial Institutions
The Bank of Israel maintains
regular relations with these international financial institutions in various
domains: participation in discussions and exchanges of views, voting,
hosting of professional delegations, placement of Israeli experts in
professional delegations to other countries, providing the institutions with
data for their publications, obtaining information from these institutions
and circulating it among interested parties in Israel, etc.

Israel's active involvement in international
financial institutions, via the Bank of Israel, helps to strengthen
relations with economic policymakers abroad and reinforce ties between the
Israeli economy and other economies. The Bank acts to increase public
awareness of its activities and the areas of its responsibility. It does so
by means of its publications, press releases, etc. In addition, there is a
Visitors Center in the Bank's premises in Jerusalem, with an exhibition
showing the development of money and the issue of money, and with films,
lectures and games explaining the main functions of the Bank. |
