When Botswana gained independence from Britain in 1966, the country was part of the Rand Monetary Area. In 1974 Botswana withdrew from the RMA, and the Bank of Botswana and Financial Institution Acts established the legal framework for a central bank in Botswana to be established in 1975. The Pula was launched as a national currency in 1976, and in 1977 the Bank of Botswana became the government banker.   As such, it has responsibility for maintaining monetary and financial stability in Botswana, underpinned by confidence in the national currency, sound banks and an effective payments system. To fulfil its mandate, the Bank relies on a well-trained and motivated work force. In turn, this requires that the Bank operates effectively in all areas, including the support services necessary to achieve its core objectives. The Bank seeks to promote and maintain:  • monetary stability;  • a safe, sound and stable financial system;  • an efficient payments mechanism;  • public confidence in the national currency;  • sound international financial relations; and to provide:  • efficient banking services to its various clients; and  • sound economic and financial advice to Government. In achieving the objectives above, the Bank commits itself to providing effective support functions through a sound banking and financial control system, appropriate information system and the development of competent and qualified staff.
