Since Investec Bank was founded in South Africa in 1974, it has expanded through a combination of substantial organic growth and a series of strategic acquisitions in South Africa, the United Kingdom and other geographies.

Investec’s strategic goals are motivated by the desire to develop an efficient and integrated business on an international scale through the active pursuit of clearly established core competencies in the group’s principal business areas.

Investec Bank provide a diverse range of financial products and services to a niche client base in three principal markets, the United Kingdom, South Africa and Australia, as well as certain other geographies. The Bank provides working capital and international commercial banking support to these clients, including services such as treasury management.

The group’s philosophy has been to build well-defined, value-added businesses focusing on serving the needs of select market niches where the group can compete effectively. Besides commercial banking, which includes deposit taking, the provision of cheque services and lending, Investec Bank may also carry on any other business which is regulated or authorized by Reserve Bank, including financial advisory services, trade finance, short term investing and short-term foreign exchange.

The Reserve Bank is responsible for bank regulation and supervision in South Africa. The purpose is to achieve a sound, efficient banking system in the interest of the depositors of banks and the economy as a whole. This function is performed by issuing banking licenses to banking institutions and monitoring their activities as regulated by the Banks Act (No. 94 of 1990) and the regulations relating thereto.
